Altitude & Health Issues

Above 8,000 feet, the altitude can affect anyone from lower elevations. Adverse symptoms may include headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, restless sleep, coughing, and difficulty in breathing. If symptoms persist, seek medical attention.

• Reduce alcohol, caffeine, and salty foods

• Drink 3 or 4 times more water than usual

• Take it easy if you are tired

• Do not push the limits of your physical capabilities

Sun Protection

Overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation can lead to sunburns and skin cancer

• Protect yourself 365 days a year

• Wear sunscreen or protective clothing, UV-blocking sunglasses, and a hat

• Select sunscreen that blocks UVA and UVB rays, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30 or higher

Variable Mountain Conditions

• The alpine environment offers extreme and variable weather conditions which can change quickly

• Know your surroundings

• Check skin frequently for signs of frostbite (use the buddy system)

• Take frequent “warm-up” breaks

• Dress properly (layers) for the conditions and anticipate changes

• Pay attention to slippery or snowy walkways, to avoid slips and falls
